Whittington Castle – be our ‘friends’ again!
From this Easter weekend you can show your support for Whittington castle by signing
up for membership of the Preservation Trust. Anybody can join on payment of a small
annual subscription, and in return you’ll get a member’s
free parking pass and special rates for plays and concerts,
as well as being able to get involved in the running of the Trust.
Whittington castle is the first community-run ancient monument in
England. The Whittington Castle Preservation Trust was set up in
1998 with the support of a strong local ‘Friends’ group which raised
eye-watering amounts of money and channelled the enthusiasm
to achieve the near-impossible. Unfortunately under charity law the
‘Friends’ was wound up when the Trust was started (because a charity can’t raise
money for another charity!) but the current Trustees want to open the Trust to a
wider membership. If you’re already one of the dedicated volunteers who keep the
castle running by staffing the bookshop and cafe, or by helping at weddings and events,
you’ll be given membership without having to pay.
Whether you want to get involved in the management of the castle or just to show your support for a wonderful local asset, come and sign up! Applications open at our Easter re-enactment event on Sunday 31st March and Monday 1st April, and after that you can join any time the castle is open. Membership forms will also be available at Oswestry museum and various venues in Whittington.
Membership costs £10 a year (£20 for a family, £5 for concessions) and the money will all go to help maintain and improve the castle.
