WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Over 50 projects from the UK, Ireland and Spain have been recognised by the prestigious Civic Trust Awards at a ceremony held at St George's Hall in Liverpool, on Friday 12th March. The Awards were presented to the best new buildings, public spaces, restorations and public art by Civic Trust Awards Patron, architect and TV presenter George Clarke.

The Awards attracted over 330 entries and winning projects, demonstrating excellence in design whilst offering a cultural, social or economic benefit to the local community.

Whittington Castle near Oswestry was recognised by the National Panel for a Special Recognition Award for its strong community initiative and positive impact on the people it serves.

Peter Ray Chairman of Whittington Castle Preservation Trust said

“We are extremely delighted to receive this recognition by the Civic Trust and as the only community run castle in the country awards like this spur other communities to take on projects like ours.  Today we are proud to have rescued this truly iconic historic castle for future generations”.

Civic Trust Awards Managing Director, Malcolm Hankey said "we were delighted to see such a diverse range of projects submitted for consideration. The Civic Trust Awards celebrate not only design excellence, but also the relationship between structures, places, the environment and local communities. This year's group of winners successfully illustrate how this relationship can produce effective and imaginative solutions."

Award winners include the Liverpool One Masterplan, the restoration of St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square London, the innovative Creative Arts Units at Aberystwyth University, landmark sculpture Dream, sited on a former colliery in St Helens and a new winery facility for Bodegas Protos in northern Spain.

A full list of winners is available on the website www.civictrustawards.org.uk where the 2010 Awards Brochure is also available to download.

From buildings to bridges; cafés to churches; housing to hospitals; public realm to public art; the next entry round for the Civic Trust Awards will be open to receive applications on 5th July 2010. Entries are invited from UK and Ireland in addition to suitable international projects completed by UK based architects, designers and engineers.
